Mara had stopped counting the days since she first walked into the glowing cavern beneath the ridge. The creature she had come to know as Vael waited for her there each night, vast and patient, its skin shifting between obsidian and the deep violet of a storm sky. Tonight it did not wait in the shadows. It rose to meet her, and the air filled with the warm scent of rain on stone.
